Types Of MBA Entrance Exams In India

There is a saying that “Education is not preparation for life, Education is life itself”. Indeed education is building block of life and a backbone in development in today’s world. It opens door of knowledge and power. In this league one such education qualification is MBA i.e. Masters in Business Administration.

In the current era it is one of the highest preferred or opted courses in the world. It is a two years course with four semesters. To get through one of the best and renowned colleges one has to clear different exams. Like GMAT, GRE etc on international level and CAT, CMAT,NMAT, ,MICAT,TISSNET,MAT  and many more region and college based exam on National level. Each exam has its on syllabus, eligibility criteria, cut offs. Let’s have an overview of these exams.

CAT

The main and the biggest exam for MBA is CAT i.e. Common Admission Test. It is a national level online computer- based test for admission in post graduate management programs. It is conducted once in a year and its score is valid only for one year. It is a three hour long test with section wise time duration. It consists of three sections namely:

  • Quantitative Ability
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Language Comprehension

This exam can be taken by discipline of any graduate from science, commerce and arts. It has a common syllabus for all streams that’s why it is named so. With clearing of this exam one gets top B-Schools in India like IIMS. At present there are 20 IIMS in India. With its score all other A-tier colleges can be approached as well. In all there are 100 questions with three marks each which makes it an overall 300 marks exam with negative marking for every wrong answer.

CMAT

Common Management Admission Test. It is also like CAT is an online computer- based test conducted by National Testing Agency [NTA] once every year on every third Sunday of the month January. It was conducted for the very first time in the year 2012. Earlier there were many exams of private colleges causing anxiety and financial burden for students appearing for so many examinations. So to reduce this CMAT was introduced as its score is valid in almost every good B-School other than IIMS. It is a three hour exam conducted online in two shifts at almost 60-65 centers all over India. It also consists of three sections similar in CAT with 100 questions each of four marks with negative marking of one for every wrong answer. A maximum mark of the examination is 400. This test is conducted once every year.

NMAT

This is a computer-online based exam conducted by Graduate Management Council (GMAC) famously known as NMAT by GMAC. It is a two hour long test conducted within 75 days window. One advantage of this exam is that there are two retakes after appearing for the first time for a candidate with no negative marking. Candidate can choose the exam date on their own with preferred time slots as well. It has three sections with 120 questions overall. Each section is allotted a time barrier one has to complete that section within the prescribed time.

XAT

It is also known as Xavier Aptitude Test. For more than half a century it is conducted by Xavier Labor Relation Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur on account of Xavier Association of Management (XAMI). This exams score is valid for all the Xavier Institute and other top management schools. Earlier it was pen-paper based test till 2017 from 2018 onwards it is online. This test has four sections :

  • Quantitative Ability
  • Decision Making
  • Verbal and Logical Ability
  • General Awareness

It consists of approximately 100 questions with one mark each with negative marking for every wrong answer and there is also deduction of marks if more than specified number of questions is left unattempted. There is no sectional time limit. The exam duration is of three hours. This exam is conducted once a year.

SNAP

SNAP i.e. Symbiosis National Aptitude is the exam conducted Symbiosis University. The University has a total of whooping 38 institutions spread over 10 cities in the country. It also consists of the three basic sections which is common in all other major MBA Entrance Exams as mentioned earlier. It is a two hour computer –online exam. The tally of total number of questions is 110. There is negative marking as well. There are two types of question in this test:

  • Normal questions: Objective type questions
  • Special Questions: Subjective type questions whose answer will be given using virtual keyboard.
  • Marking scheme is different for both types of questions. It is conducted once a year.

IIFT

IIFT stands for Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. It is public business school autonomous in nature. Started by Government of India in the year 1963. The institute is autonomous hence conducts its own exam nationwide once a year. It has just two campuses, one is IIFT Delhi another is IIFT Kolkata.  It is a two hour exam which is also like others an online test. It has three sections:

  • English Comprehension
  • General Awareness
  • Logical reasoning and quantitative analysis

There is no sectional time limit and negative marking is very much present for wrong answered questions.

TISSNET

It is abbreviated as Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). It is one of the oldest institutes for professional social work education. It is an online exam for admission in all Masters (M.A) program offered by the institute. It is conducted by TISS National Entrance Test. There are four campuses of TISS. It has three sections :

  • General Knowledge
  • English
  • Quantitative Ability and Logical Reasoning

It is a 100 minute exam with 100 questions and no negative marking. In this exam GK has 40 % weightage. After TISSNET is over TISS-MAT is conducted  which is an exam of just 45 minutes for the candidates who have applied for Masters in Human Resources and Labour Relations or Organization Development, Change and Leadership. There are 45 questions in TISS-MAT.TISS-MAT has negative marking for every wrong answer.

MICAT

It is a college specific exam for the college known as Mudra Institute of Communication (MICA). It is located outside the Ahmadabad. It is one of the best colleges for strategic management and communication skills in the country. It is a computer based test. The paper consists of both objective and subjective type of questions. It is 2 hours 45 minutes exam from which 35 minutes is allotted for section one. It has a bit different pattern than other exams as the sections are:

  • Psychometric Test
  • Verbal ability(VA)
  • Quantitative Ability(QA) and Data Interpretation(DI)
  • General awareness(GA)
  • Divergent and Convergent Thinking(DCR)
  • Descriptive Test.

All these topics are combined to make three sections where Psychometric test and Descriptive test have no negative marking. In descriptive test there are 4 questions in total which need to be completed within 35 minutes time limit. In Psychometric test there are 150 questions and all are compulsory to answer. It is conducted twice a year and the scre of best of the two is accepted.

MAT

We can say it is one of the easiest MBA Entrance exams also known as Management Aptitude Test. Its score is accepted by approximately 600 colleges in the country. It is conducted in both ways either computer based or pen –paper based. It is 150 minutes exam with 200 questions. Each section consists of 40 questions. It has negative marking for every wrong answer. It is conducted four times a year and its score is valid for one year only.

MHCET

It is an annual entrance exam conducted by the Government of Maharashtra. This exams score is accepted in all the colleges of the state. One of the benefits of this exam is that even though candidates from all over the country can appear in this exam but the cutoff is different for state candidates and the outsiders which is higher as compared to others in different colleges. This exam is conducted in two shifts. It is a 150 minutes online test with 200 questions divided between four sections namely:

  • Logical Reasoning
  • Abstract Reasoning
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

There is no negative marking and one mark is awarded for every correct answer. It is also conducted once in a year and validity of the score is also one year.

So instead of dropping a year if the CAT exam didn’t go well one can try these exams to get into a good college and pursue ones dream of becoming a manager. As dropping a year doesn’t give guarantee that the goal will be achieved next year surely. So prepare well and come out of the examination hall with flying colors. ALL THE BEST.
